Congratulations to culinary students representing South Carolina from Anderson Career and Technology Center for wowing the judges and placing in the top five at the National ProStart Invitational, which was held this past weekend in Charleston.

The team faced off against more than 400 students from across the country (and even Quam) at the championship that features two separate competitions: The management competition, which requires participants to develop and defend a business proposal for a restaurant, and the culinary competition, in which teams are allotted 60 minutes to prepare a three-course meal without access to electricity or running water.

The management team walked away with an impressive second place and the culinary teamed won fifth. South Carolina was the ONLY state that placed in the top five in both categories! The students won coveted scholarships, trophies and bragging rights.

The teams earned their opportunity to compete in the national championship after winning the South Carolina ProStart Invitational in March. This year, Anderson Career and Technology Center students happened to win both the state management and culinary championships.

The National ProStart Invitational being held in Charleston was a big win for the Palmetto state, bringing in thousands of visitors and culinary experts from across the country. The national competition rotates regionally each year, and Charleston beat out several other big southeastern cities to host the 2017 competition.

“The passion and excitement displayed by these students is contagious, and shows how valuable the ProStart program is,” said South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association President and CEO John Durst. “Having the national competition here gives the Holy City the chance to showcase its world-class culinary scene and culture to visitors from around the world.”

Supported by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF), ProStart® is a career and technical education program focused on teaching culinary arts and restaurant management fundamentals through a combination of classroom and industry instruction.
