Anderson Career and Technology students celebrate their 4th place finish in the Culinary Arts Competition.

It’s one for the record books! South Carolina’s Culinary and Management teams both walked away with trophies, medals and scholarships at the National ProStart Invitational held in Anaheim, CA this week, the only state with teams that placed in both categories.

Wando High School clinched first place in the Management Competition, beating out hundreds of students from all across the country and U.S. territories. The team from Anderson Career and Technology Center took home 4th place in the Culinary Arts Competition, wowing the judges with their three-course meal.

After winning the 2015 SC ProStart Invitational in March, both teams practiced diligently to perfect their presentations, working with industry experts from across the state. The SCRLA thanks everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to work with these students. It truly paid off!

The Culinary Competition requires student teams to prepare a three-course meal in 60 minutes, using only two butane burners and without access to running water or electricity. Teams are evaluated on taste, teamwork, safety and sanitation, among other skills.

Anderson Career and Technology Center culinary team members Matt Long, Daniel Irvin, Donna Harris, Andrew Isble and Tommi Rae Fowler, under the guidance of teacher Chris Moree, impressed the judges over with their mouth-watering menu.

Management teams develop a business proposal for an original restaurant concept and present it to a panel of industry judges. The students are then asked to solve the types of challenges restaurant managers face on a daily basis.

Wando High School students, under the guidance of Chef Bill Twaller, wowed the judges with their Global Gourmet food truck concept. Students Anna Ware, Talbot McGee and Tanner Crunelle won the judges over with their plan for a mobile restaurant that features a wide selection of international gourmet sandwiches.

ProStart is one of the largest industry-supported career technical education programs in the nation, offering students the knowledge and skills necessary to consider and forge rich and varied careers in the restaurant and foodservice sector.

Congratulations students! We are so proud of you!
