Please join S.C. Department of Commerce, Clemson University and the S.C. Department of Agriculture onOctober 12th from2:00-3:00 pm for an educational webinar detailing the potential impacts of African Swine Fever (ASF) on the food supply chain and food security in South Carolina between the pork industry, animal health officials and private industry partners integral to the food supply chain.

On July 28, 2021, ASF was confirmed in two locations in the Dominican Republic and spread over the next few weeks to 77 outbreak sites within 25 provinces. These are the first recorded cases of ASF in the Western Hemisphere in 40 years. On September 18, Haiti reported that ASF had been detected in pigs from a backyard farm near the border with the Dominican Republic.

While ASF is not a human health concern, it is a highly contagious viral disease that causes hemorrhagic fever and high mortality rates in pigs. Before the cases in Dominican Republic and Haiti, the recent and rapid geographic spread of ASF throughout Asia and Europe has shown the significant economic and trade impacts of the disease on the agricultural industry and has caused some disruption in the food supply chain.

As the first outbreak of ASF in the Western Hemisphere in 40 years, this constitutes a significant threat to the pork industries. Clemson University Livestock Poultry Health is working with federal and state agency partners and the South Carolina pork industry to increase prevention and mitigation efforts.
