Douglas OFlaherty

Douglas grew up in a small rural community in Ohio with ten brothers and sisters. Feeding 13 people in the OFlaherty household was always an event. He quickly learned that helping his mother in the kitchen would ensure he would get fed, but moreover ensued his passion for cooking and serving others. Learning customer service in his father’s service station as a young teen, Douglas knew his place in life was to help others.

He began his journey in the hospitality industry with a degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management with an emphasis in Culinary Arts from Hocking College. After college he worked at a beachfront resort in Negril, Jamaica in both hotel operations and foodservice. In 1991 he moved to South Carolina where he worked in many different facets of management in Hilton Head Island and Columbia.

In January of 2001, Douglas joined that South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association (then the Hospitality Association of South Carolina) as the Director of Education overseeing the ProStart Program. During his tenure, he has built the program from 6 schools and 150 students to 63 schools and nearly 3,000 students yearly. He has also secured more than $2 million in grant funding to build the SC ProStart program over the past seven years. Now as Vice President of Operations, he is responsible for membership, communications, education and finances for the association.

Douglas was awarded the IOM graduate recognition for completing a comprehensive course of study in nonprofit management through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Institute for Organization Management program.

As a devoted fan of the USC Gamecocks, you can find him tailgating outside Williams-Brice Stadium and often traveling to away games Saturdays in the fall. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time outdoors in SC’s state parks or gardening in his own backyard. Often frequenting the vast culinary options around the state, he thoroughly appreciates and is proud to serve all aspects of the hospitality industry.

Douglas volunteers for numerous organizations and charities. He currently serves on the South Carolina Society of Association Executives Board of Directors and the United States Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organizational Management Board of Regents.
